“HELLO?” MARILYN’S VOICE WAS SOFT AND BREATHY, AS IF SHE’D just been awakened by the phone.

“It’s Pier.”

“Hi, Pier.” Marilyn’s voice brightened. “What’s up? Everything okay?”

“Oh, everything’s fine. But Jimmy’s been worried about you.”

“Why?”

“He said he called you and someone answered the phone and said you weren’t home, but he knew you were home.”

Marilyn laughed softly. “That was Dr. Greenson. I should hire him as a flacker. He tells everyone who calls that I’m not home. He’s thinks everyone who calls me is a mugger and a rapist. Of course, in Jimmy’s case…”

This time they both laughed.

“Is Jimmy with you?” Marilyn asked.

After a brief hesitation, Pier said, “Yes. But he was afraid I’d get jealous if he called you, so I’m calling.”

“God, men are so fucking weird.”

“You can say that again.”

“He said something about you being threatened.”

Marilyn giggled. “Oh, he always blows everything out of proportion. No, just problems with men. But I’m always having problems with men.”

“You’re not alone.”

“Is everything all right with you and Jimmy?” Marilyn asked, concern in her voice.

“Everything’s great…thanks to you for getting us together.”

“I didn’t do anything but whisper in that lovesick fool’s ear.” Pier giggled. “I think Jimmy is coming over later,” Marilyn said. “We’re going over to Chasen’s for a quick bite. You’re coming, aren’t you?”

“Jeez, I don’t know. He just wandered into my apartment a few minutes ago, and he looks like he needs a shower and a suit.”

“That figures.”

“I’ll check with him and call you back.”

“Okay,” Marilyn said.

Pier could hear her yawn. “You’re sure you’re okay?” Pier asked.

But there was no answer, just the whisper of distant breathing.
